The Candle

One scent. The island.

We make one candle and we make it right — poured into a real coconut shell we harvested and prepared ourselves, with apricot-soy wax and our own home-made coconut oil.

Our Story

From the side of the road to the center of your table

We're a Key West couple who saw something special in what everyone else was throwing away. After the palms get trimmed, the coconuts end up on the curb as yard waste — so we go through the trimmings, collect them by hand, and turn them into candles and centerpieces.

Every Salt & Husk candle is a real island coconut, worked by hand from start to finish. We pay attention to every detail, which is why no two are ever the same.

Why it matters to me

I live with multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease in which the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord. It's different for everyone, and much of it can't be seen from the outside.

Making these candles by hand helps me. Gathering, shucking and pouring keep my joints moving, help fight muscle atrophy, and help me hold on to the control in my hands that MS tries to take away.

I share this to help more people understand MS. My hope is to one day give back by raising money for MS research and for people living with the disease, starting here in the Keys.

The Process

Ten to fifteen hours in every candle

Nothing about this is fast. Here's what happens between the curb and your home.

Coconuts hanging in a Key West palm
01

Gather

We go through palm trimmings around Key West and collect the coconuts left out as yard waste.

A pile of brown coconuts aging by the road
02

Age

The coconuts are aged until they turn brown, so the shells come out thicker and harder.

A pile of shucked, split and cleaned coconut halves
03

Shuck & Split

We shuck each one by hand to reveal the nut, slice it in half and clean it out.

Coconut halves and cut rings laid out on a table
04

Slow-Bake

The halves bake on low for 8 to 16 hours, drying the meat so it comes cleanly away from the shell.

05

Make the Oil

We cook that coconut meat down ourselves to make real coconut oil.

06

Blend & Pour

The oil is blended into apricot-soy wax with our exotic coconut scent and poured around a crackling wood wick.

07

Finish

A 99.99% copper ring joins the top and base, wrapped in hemp and finished with a shell from Keys beaches.

08

Light

The copper adds a grounding weight in your hand, and once the wax melts and cools to warm, it doubles as a lotion.
